{"id":905,"date":"2009-05-26T06:03:27","date_gmt":"2009-05-26T13:03:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/palblog.fxpal.com\/?p=905"},"modified":"2009-10-13T20:47:08","modified_gmt":"2009-10-14T03:47:08","slug":"google-fellowship-in-hci","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fxpal.net\/?p=905","title":{"rendered":"2009 Google Fellowship in HCI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google recently announced its <a title=\"The Best and the brightest | Google Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2009\/05\/best-and-brightest.html\" target=\"_blank\">2009 Google Fellowship recipients<\/a>, and I was pleased to find a name I recognize among them. <a title=\"Nicholas Chen | University of Maryland\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/~nchen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nicholas Chen<\/a> (University of Maryland) won the fellowship for HCI. Nick&#8217;s been doing very interesting research on multi-screen reading devices (check out this CHI 2008 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.umd.edu\/alandaluz\/nchen\/ebook\/dualdisp-chi.mov\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>) and pen-based computing. Congrats to Nick on this impressive achievement! It&#8217;s great to see this interesting part of the HCI field being highlighted in this fashion.<\/p>\n<p>It is ironic, however, that there is no award for research in anything resembling <a title=\"Information Seeking Support Systems Report\" href=\"http:\/\/palblog.fxpal.com\/?p=896\" target=\"_blank\">information seeking support\u00a0 systems<\/a>. There are awards for\u00a0 research areas such as cloud computing, machine vision, distributed systems, and natural language processing, but nothing integrative that could be used to improve information seeking interfaces.
