In light of recent attempts by the AP to implement a rather <a title=\"iCopyright - Associated Press\" href=\"http:\/\/license.icopyright.net\/rights\/tag.act?inprocess=t&amp;tag=3.5721%3Ficx_id%3DD97U6IDG0\" target=\"_blank\">draconian copyright policy<\/a> this is an issue worth following. AP has tried going after some <a title=\"AP: Drudge Retort matter 'closed' | lostremote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lostremote.com\/2008\/06\/19\/ap-drudge-retort-matter-closed\/\" target=\"_blank\">bloggers<\/a> and <a title=\"AP's copyright complaint a likely loser | Media Nation\" href=\"http:\/\/medianation.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/aps-copyright-complaint-likely-loser.html\" target=\"_blank\">artists<\/a>, so far without much success. Nonetheless, their <a title=\"iCopyright - Associated Press\" href=\"https:\/\/license.icopyright.net\/rights\/offer.act?inprocess=t&amp;sid=36&amp;tag=3.5721%3Ficx_id%3DD97U6IDG0\" target=\"_blank\">published fees<\/a> for online quoting of excerpts of their content are absurd:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th><strong>Words<\/strong><\/th>\n<th><strong>Fees<\/strong><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>5 &#8211; 25<\/td>\n<td>$12.50<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>26 &#8211; 50<\/td>\n<td>$17.50<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>51 &#8211; 100<\/td>\n<td>$25.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>101 &#8211; 250<\/td>\n<td>$50.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>251 and up<\/td>\n<td>$100.00<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I don&#8217;t mean to imply that they aren&#8217;t allowed to protect their intellectual property, particularly in unambiguous (albeit <a title=\"Old Japanese maps in Google Earth reveal level secrets, kindle expect of abuse | samsung mobile\" href=\"http:\/\/samsungmobile.walrusclub.com\/2009\/05\/02\/old-japanese-maps-in-google-earth-reveal-level-secrets-kindle-expect-of-abuse\/\" target=\"_blank\">funny<\/a>) situations, but if these kinds of fees are enforced, it will be prohibitively expensive for most publishers to even mention the <em>titles<\/em> of AP articles!<\/p>\n<p>I can only hope that the solution that emerges from The Economist debate is a compromise rather than a polarized outcome like the <a title=\"DMCA | Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DMCA\" target=\"_blank\">DMCA<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economist is running a (moderated) public debate on copyright that should be interesting to those involved in electronic publishing, particularly on the Web.
