The collection goes all the way back to 1922. In fact, the first issue  has an article on the transmission characteristics of the submarine  cable.\u00a0For  example, in 1978 an <a href=\"http:\/\/bstj.bell-labs.com\/oldfiles\/year.1978\/BSTJ.1978.5706-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">entire issue<\/a> of the journal was dedicated to a new  operating system called Unix.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There  are many other important and historic papers that originally appeared  in BSTJ including a paper on the first semiconductor, Shannon\u2019s work on  Information Theory, and work on fiber optics.\u00a0 This collection is an  important contribution from one of the premier research organizations in  the world in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AT&amp;T Bell Labs has recently made their entire archive of the Bell Systems Technical Journal (BSTJ) available for free on-line.
