There was much concern among hypertext researchers that the web in general (and <a title=\"Tim Berners-Lee | W3C\" href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/People\/Berners-Lee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Berners-Lee<\/a> in particular) had gotten it all wrong because they had ignored the years of scholarship about how to build hypertext systems.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This sentiment is rooted in the view of <em>hypertext as <a title=\"Research in Structural Computing | Journal of Universal Computer Science\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jucs.org\/jucs_8_10\/research_in_structural_computing\" target=\"_blank\">structure<\/a><\/em>. The <em>ad hoc<\/em> nature of the web, the lack of <a title=\"Davis, H. C. 1999. Hypertext link integrity. ACM Comput. Surv. 31, 4es (Dec. 1999), 28 | ACM Digital Library\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.acm.org\/10.1145\/345966.346026\" target=\"_blank\">link integrity<\/a>, the lack of separation of <a title=\"Gr\u00f8nb\u00e6k, K. and Trigg, R. H. 1992. Design issues for a Dexter-based hypermedia system. In Proc. ECHT '92. ACM, New York, NY, 191-200  | ACM Digital Library\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.acm.org\/10.1145\/168466.168525\" target=\"_blank\">link structure from content<\/a>, all were used to critique the way the HTTP and HTML were used in conjunction with the web browser to implement hypertext.<\/p>\n<p>If one looks and <em>hypertext as behavior<\/em>, on the other hand, the web presents a different picture. The premise that you can display more detail on something by clicking on some reduced representation of that object is the real legacy of hypertext research.
