The acknowledgment that information seeking is a collaborative activity is  part of a trend toward foregrounding the social in system design [5].<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We wrote this in the introduction of a SIGGROUP <a title=\"Churchill, E.F., Sullivan, J., Golovchinsky, G., and Snowdon, D. (1999) Collaborative and co-operative information seeking: CSCW'98 workshop report.  SIGGROUP Bull. 20, 1 (Apr. 1999), 56-59. | ACM Digital Library\" href=\"http:\/\/doi.acm.org\/10.1145\/327556.327637\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> on a CSCW 1998 workshop on, you guessed it, Collaborative and Co-operative Information Seeking in Digital Information Environments. <em>Plus \u00e7a change.<\/em> The workshop was organized by <a title=\"Elizabeth Churchill\" href=\"http:\/\/elizabethchurchill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Churchill<\/a>, Joe Sullivan, Dave Snowdon and me. It is interesting to go back and read the position papers submitted by Mark Ackerman, Andrew Cohen, Jesus Favela, Mark Ginsburg,\u00a0 Tom Gross, Timothy Koschmann, Joseph McCarthy, Alan Munro, Kevin Palfreyman,\u00a0 Volker Paulsen, Alfredo Sanchez, Stefan Scholze, John Thomas, Michael Twidale, Volker Wulf, and Guillermo Zeballos.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In the meantime, Merrie Morris, Jeremy Pickens and I are organizing another <a title=\"CFP: 2nd Workshop on Collaborative Information Seeking | FXPAL Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/palblog.fxpal.com\/?p=1930\" target=\"_blank\">workshop<\/a> on Collaborative Information Seeking at <a title=\"The 2010 ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cscw2010.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CSCW 2010<\/a> in Savannah, which promises to be quite interesting; I&#8217;ll be posting the papers on the workshop site when all the submissions are finalized.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison in themes discussed in papers at the three workshops is illuminating:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th>Category<\/th>\n<th>CSCW 1998<\/th>\n<th><a title=\"Workshop on Collaborative Information Retrieval \" href=\"http:\/\/workshops.fxpal.com\/jcdl2008\/\" target=\"_blank\">JCDL 2008<\/a><\/th>\n<th><a title=\"2nd International Workshop on Collaborative Information Seeking\" href=\"http:\/\/workshops.fxpal.com\/cscw2010cis\/\" target=\"_blank\">CSCW 2010<\/a><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>models\/theories<\/td>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<td>5<\/td>\n<td>6<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>practices<\/td>\n<td>3<\/td>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<td>3<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>algorithms and systems<\/td>\n<td>6<\/td>\n<td>2<\/td>\n<td>4<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>recommendation<\/td>\n<td>4<\/td>\n<td>0<\/td>\n<td>2<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>sensemaking<\/td>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<td>0<\/td>\n<td>2<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The only significant change is a pronounced increase in emphasis on model building and theories of collaborative information seeking, reflecting the accumulation of people&#8217;s experience with the phenomena of collaboration. The lack of recommendation papers in the 2008 workshop reflects an explicit selection bias on our part. Of course the details that interest people have shifted, but it is good to see a robust, multi-disciplinary approach to exploring this interesting field.
