{"id":2093,"date":"2009-10-20T04:48:52","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T11:48:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/palblog.fxpal.com\/?p=2093"},"modified":"2009-10-30T16:19:03","modified_gmt":"2009-10-30T23:19:03","slug":"more-mathematical-adventures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.fxpal.net\/?p=2093","title":{"rendered":"More mathematical adventures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In early August I thumbed through a copy of The New Yorker idly wondering which article I&#8217;d like to read when the name &#8220;Glen Whitney&#8221; popped out. A close friend of mine from graduate school is named Glen Whitney. Could it be the same person? Sure enough, with the <a title=\"Math-hattan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/talk\/2009\/08\/03\/090803ta_talk_paumgarten\" target=\"_blank\">article called Math-hattan<\/a>, it had to be! The article talks about his efforts to create a math museum and describes the math tours he is currently giving of Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>The museum itself is still in the planning stages, but the exhibit <a title=\"Math Midway\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mathmidway.org\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Math Midway <\/a>gathered <a title=\"Math Midway press\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mathmidway.org\/math-midway-press.php\" target=\"_blank\">a lot of press<\/a> during its tour this summer. I love the picture of Glen riding the <a title=\"Square wheeled tricycle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mathmidway.org\/math-midway-activities-pedal.php\" target=\"_blank\">square wheeled tricycle<\/a> that&#8217;s part of the exhibit. (Before looking at the pictures, how did they succeed in making the ride smooth?) Like <a title=\"BAMA\" href=\"http:\/\/palblog.fxpal.com\/?p=2075\" target=\"_blank\">the\u00a0 Bay Area Mathematical Adventures series<\/a>, this exhibit is great outreach. I hope eventually it will come west.<\/p>\n<p>In graduate school, I found Glen&#8217;s enthusiasm for many things, particularly for mathematics, inspiring and infectious.
